Why Dallas Homeowners Act
Dallas's Power Outage Reality
Dallas sits on the same ERCOT grid as the rest of Texas, which means the city has a different kind of power risk than most of America: a combination of severe summer storms, the occasional violent tornado, and the kind of winter event that took the grid down statewide.
Oncor runs the wires across Dallas Fort Worth. When Winter Storm Uri hit in February 2021, ERCOT pushed the grid past failure and nearly 254,000 Oncor customers in Dallas County were without power on the afternoon of February 16, many for days in subfreezing temperatures. In October 2019, an EF3 tornado tore through Preston Hollow and Lake Highlands, shredding substations and lines block by block, and nearly 140,000 Oncor customers lost power. The May 28, 2024 derecho left more than 650,000 Oncor customers without power across North Texas, with 80 mph gusts knocking out service across whole zip codes.
The day to day risk in Dallas is less dramatic but happens more often. A pop up severe thunderstorm with hail and high wind can take a neighborhood offline for hours. A standby generator starts on its own within seconds and runs until Oncor restores service, whether the outage lasts an hour or a week.
February 2021, the week the ERCOT grid failed at scale. Dallas went days without power in record cold.
Straight line winds near 80 mph on May 28, 2024. The last customers waited into the weekend.
An EF3 tornado took a direct hit on Preston Hollow and Lake Highlands. Some homes were dark for over a week.
North Texas runs one of the highest severe weather counts in the country. Most Dallas outages come from routine storms, not the big events.
Why Dallas Chooses Grasten
What Makes Us Different
Plenty of companies install generators across Dallas Fort Worth. Here's what makes Grasten Power different, and why it matters when the next tornado warning hits or ERCOT issues a conservation alert.
Generator Focused
Generators are the whole business at Grasten. We don't take HVAC calls or general electrical work, so every technician on our Dallas team spends the day on whole-home standby generators, from sizing a Lake Highlands ranch to servicing a unit in Far North Dallas.
Specialists, Not Generalists
Live 24/7 Phone Support
In February 2021, nearly 254,000 Dallas County customers lost power during Winter Storm Uri, many for days in subfreezing cold. Our dispatch runs 24/7 with a live phone, real people rather than an answering service, and remote monitoring alerts help our technicians diagnose problems faster.
Always Answered
Customized Mobile Fleet
Our own service fleet covers Dallas Fort Worth, with vans stocked with the parts we use most for first-visit repairs. After the October 2019 tornado, some of the 140,000 Oncor customers who lost power waited over a week for the grid to come back.

Dallas Pricing Guide
What Does a Generator Cost in Dallas?
A whole home generator in Dallas costs $7,000 to $25,000+, installed. The number depends on unit size, fuel source, and a couple of site specifics.
Essential circuits (lights, fridge, AC unit)
Most homes under 3,000 sq ft (full house)
Larger homes, multiple HVAC zones
Large homes, home offices, medical equipment
Included in that price: the equipment, our installation crew, the automatic transfer switch, City of Dallas permit fees, and the 12 year Power Plus warranty. If you're on Atmos Energy gas, connecting to the existing line is straightforward and inexpensive. The estimate assumes a fuel source is already at the property.
Because Grasten Power installs with our own crews instead of subcontractors, we cut out the outside markup that pushes installation costs higher at other companies. As a multi brand dealer, we match you with the unit that fits your home and budget rather than the only one on the shelf. The result is a higher quality installation at a fair price.

Exclusive Power Plus Warranty 12 Years of Full Coverage
Every Generac air-cooled installation we do includes the full 12 year Power Plus Warranty at no extra cost, covering parts and labor for 12 full years beyond the standard manufacturer warranty.
Choosing Your Generator
Comparing Your Options for a Dallas Home
Grasten Power is one of the few dealers in the Dallas metro authorized to install and service all four major brands. Here's how Generac, Kohler, Cummins, and Briggs & Stratton compare for Texas homeowners.
Generac
The most widely installed whole home generator brand in the United States. Generac offers the broadest range of residential standby units (11kW to 24kW+ air-cooled) and a mature remote monitoring platform (Mobile Link). Strong parts availability and the largest dealer network make Generac the practical choice for most Texas homeowners.
Kohler
Known for quieter operation and premium build quality. Kohler residential generators are often preferred by homeowners who prioritize noise levels (especially relevant in denser neighborhoods and HOA communities). Commercial-grade engineering translated into residential units.
Cummins
Industrial-grade engineering scaled for the home. Cummins backup generators carry the same engine heritage that powers commercial fleets, with sizing options that comfortably cover larger Texas homes, multi-HVAC properties, and homes with elevators or pools. Diesel and natural gas configurations available.
Briggs & Stratton
Value-tier standby generators built by one of the most established names in residential power. Briggs & Stratton units are a strong fit for homeowners who want reliable backup at a lower entry price, or who only need to cover the essential circuits of a smaller home.
Your free estimate covers all four brands against your specific home, neighborhood, and HOA. We don’t make more money selling you one over another, so the conversation stays about which unit actually fits your property best.

What Dallas Homeowners Say
Dallas Homeowner Questions
Dallas Generator Questions, Answered
The questions Dallas homeowners ask us most often before they schedule a free estimate.
What does a whole home generator install cost in Dallas?
$7,000 to $25,000+ turnkey is the honest range, and most Dallas installs come in around the middle. A 22kW Generac air cooled unit on a 2,500 square foot home is the most common configuration we put in across the metro. That number includes the generator, the transfer switch, the gas and electrical hookup off an existing Atmos Energy line, City of Dallas permits, and our 12 year Power Plus warranty. Price climbs for larger homes, longer runs from the panel, a service upgrade, or a new gas line. The free on site estimate gives you an exact number for your address, no obligation.
Who pulls the permit, and how long does it take?
Grasten Power pulls every permit. The city requires building, electrical, and mechanical (gas) permits through Dallas Building Inspection. We submit the application, schedule the inspections, and handle any HOA architectural review (relevant in Highland Park, Preston Hollow, and most of the gated communities north of LBJ). From you, we need a signed Notice of Commencement and a property survey. Approval normally runs 10 to 21 business days. Storm season backlogs sometimes stretch that.
Who services the unit after it’s installed?
The same crew that installed it. Grasten Power runs our own service fleet across Dallas Fort Worth, with mobile vehicles stocked with the parts we use most. Our dispatch runs 24/7 with a live phone (real humans, not an answering service). Most Dallas customers enroll in an annual maintenance plan at installation. It keeps the unit healthy and keeps the 12 year warranty active.
What size unit fits a typical Dallas home?
For homes between 1,800 and 3,500 square feet, a 22kW or 24kW air cooled unit handles the load. The big draw is AC. A Dallas July afternoon is hard work for the system, and the generator needs to keep up with the air conditioning, the kitchen, lighting, and the pool pump or well. Larger homes (4,000+ square feet), multiple HVAC zones, or a generator that also needs to run an elevator move you into 26kW or above, and Cummins becomes a real option there. The free estimate includes a load calc so the unit matches the house.
Will my Dallas HOA require sign off before installation?
If you’re in Highland Park, Preston Hollow, Lakewood, or a master planned community in Far North Dallas, almost certainly yes. The HOA usually wants a placement plan, screening or landscaping around the unit, and confirmation that the generator stays under their decibel limit (55 to 65 at the property line is common). Grasten Power prepares the application package and goes through the review process for you. You’re not chasing board approvals on your own.
Should I go natural gas or propane in Dallas?
Most Dallas homes on Atmos Energy run natural gas. It’s the easier setup: no fuel tank on the property, no delivery schedule, and the generator pulls off the same line that feeds the rest of the house. If your address doesn’t have natural gas service, propane is reliable but adds the cost of a 250 to 500 gallon tank and a fuel delivery contract. We look at both during the estimate and tell you straight which one makes sense for your property.
How fast is the install once everything is approved?
On site, one to two days. The first day is the concrete pad, setting the generator, and running the electrical and gas connections plus the transfer switch. The second day, if needed, is commissioning, testing, and the homeowner walkthrough. The 30 to 90 day total timeline is mostly permitting and inspection scheduling with the city, not actual labor. The work moves fast once permits are in hand.
How loud are these generators?
55 to 65 decibels, which is dishwasher volume. Kohler is the quietest of the four brands by a few decibels, which is the reason it’s a common choice in Highland Park and other neighborhoods with strict noise rules. The weekly self test runs 5 to 10 minutes, normally during business hours. During a real outage, the whole street is dark anyway and the generator humming next door is the least of anyone’s complaints.
How does this work in a tornado or severe storm?
All four brands are engineered to withstand high wind. The unit sits on a concrete pad anchored against gusts. After a major event, what tends to fail isn’t the generator itself, it’s downed lines or a damaged transfer switch, both of which our service team can handle. If a storm damages the unit, our 12 year Power Plus warranty covers parts and labor for the full 12 years. If it’s storm or hail damage to the housing, we document it and get you a repair estimate within 48 hours so the insurance claim moves.
