How Whole Home Generators Work

Your home loses power

The automatic transfer switch, wired between your meter and your electrical panel, senses the outage the instant it happens. It disconnects your home from the utility lines, so no generator power feeds back toward crews working on the grid.

Generator system activates

Your standby generator starts on its own, running on the natural gas or propane already piped to your home. Within seconds the transfer switch hands your circuits to the generator. Nobody needs to be home to flip anything.

Home fully powered

Depending on the unit, part or all of the house stays on, powered straight through your electrical panel with no extension cords and no refueling.

Utility power restored

When the grid comes back, the switch returns your home to utility power and the generator shuts itself down, then waits on standby for the next outage.

Book a free in-home visit, or send about 20 photos through our virtual site survey. We size the generator to your home and send a no-obligation proposal.

Permits & Approvals

Grasten draws up the plans, pulls the building, electrical and gas permits, and coordinates with your utilities. Most projects take 2 to 4 weeks from consultation to hookup.

Installation Day

Our own certified crew is on site for one to two days: concrete pad, generator, gas and electrical connections, and the transfer switch. No subcontractors.
